Response:
There is a strong Conservative tradition of helping people who need help to cope with the pressures of modern life. We believe in a benefits and welfare system for all in need. Many Conservatives also believe in helping directly through community action on top of what government can offer.

"It is making many go back to their old socialist beliefs, seeing in the decline of Tony Blair's authority some kind of moral judgement on New Labour and the Third Way."

That is good. A leavening of socialism after all these years without would be a good thing. Some thought and compassion for those who cannot cope with modern life. proper targetted help rather than 'care in the community'. Although Margaret started that, of course.

Of course the more Labour turns left, the further they turn away from the electorate and the "mandate" which Blair earned. The case then becomes stronger for an early election.
