JR: "Compare Scotland and Ireland. Scotland has had more money from England than Ireland has from the EU - result, very slow growth. It's lower taxes that provides the magic, not agricultural subsidies."

Alternatively, a nationalist might say that tax cuts are secondary, the primary factor, is self determination, or independence. That is something denied to Scotland but permitted to Ireland.

In actual fact, I don't disagree with you about tax. I do take issue with you on two issues.

1. You blandly ignore the EU, claiming the United Kingdom has the autonomy to do just as it pleases. Knowing as you must that we do not while we are in the European Union.

2. You are the Economic policy adviser to the Tory Party, I am sure you know what you are talking about. But you are presenting tax policies to a leader who has stated in public he would prefer to raise taxes and advocates the sort of policies Polly Toynbee approves of.

Should the Tories get into power, who is likely to get his way. The policy adviser or the Tory party leader?
Reply: Of course I know the limits the EU places upon us, and have written at great length about what we should do to loosen the shackles.
The Leader of the Opposition has stated that he wants a lower tax economy, and that it will paid for out of the proceeds of growth. I am setting out how that can happen.

As I wrote today on my blog, the uncertain state of the economy could lead to a snap election. He and his colleagues have accused the Conservatives of being "right wing" by considering tax cuts.

I am delighted read that Labour is now in favour of tax cuts, though disappointed that this only applies to Scotland.

Let the Scots set their own tax rate as long as the english don't have to pay for any shortfall in funding that they might have.

JR: "Some of us don't just want lower business and capital taxes for Scotland - we want them for England too."

The Irish used the subsidies paid indirectly by England through the EU to assist in the realignment of their economy. It is usually denied, but in my opinion the agricultural subsidies allowed them to protect their farming sector while realigning their tax regieme to favor the Financial sector, with mimimum pain.

Now the SNP (after an awfull long time) have twigged that Scotland could do the same thing, "Independence within the European Union" an oxymoron if there ever was one, actually means that the most productive sector of the English economy will subsidise, ultimately, its own demise.

You see, Ireland has benefited from a low tax regieme, the SNP now think that Scotland might too. But they definately do not want England to introduce a low tax regieme because, PRESTO! what would be the point of moving from the City with a low tax regieme to Edinburgh or Dublin?

That is exactly what the European Union and its minions fear too, "Unhealthy tax competition". Where have I heard that term before? The only tax competition the EU will tolerate, is the race to the highest (and most runious) tax rates in the world.
Reply: that should not stop English people wanting the same lower taxes that have energised otehr countries, and pressing for them.
