Health and Safety

Now we have seen the Report into the government laboratory at Pirbright we can see the health and safety lapses at that public sector facility.
Many UK farmers are saying to themselves today "If we had behaved like that we would be prosecuted for health and safety errors".
What’s the betting that there will be no prosecutions? I doubt if there will even be disciplinary action taken. The rule in the public sector is no-one is to blame. It’s all down to a lack of resources.
It was good to hear the Minister, Mr Benn, claiming they had enough money and it must be down to their priorities. That’s quite a change of tune from Labour in oppposition, where any failure in the public sector, however egregious, was down to lack of money from taxpayers. He was having to walk on eggshells as he spoke, to avoid giving the farmers extra ammunition so they could sue the government for their losses owing to the outbreak of the disease.
