Ever thought of writing a novel?
This is not going to happen.
In the first place, the Labour Party is almost completely in the hands of the Unions, who will not permit any cutbacks in personnel.
In the second place, I honestly do not think that the government show any signs of realising how bad things are. I suspect that they believe, deep down that "Gordon can handle it because he is so brilliant underneath." I base this on the comments, printed today in the Daily Mail when ministers were confronted by independent facts and their reactions to those facts.
In the third place, this demands expert judgement of whether to face up to inflation or to resist the credit crunch. I honestly do not think that the cabinet is the right place to discuss this (as you say - it should be left to the experts), but they think they are. And, of course, how much the EU has to do with all this nobody knows.
If only they had saved for a rainy day!
